We hit -17 a couple of days ago. It's warmed up to upper 20's today ![[emoticon]](http://www.coastresorts.com/sharedcontent/cfb/images/biggrin.gif "biggrin") We sure miss going south.
Speaking of surgery, Sandy is scheduled for a total knee replacement on Feb 14, so keep her in your thoughts.

My Rocky Road (Shih Tzu) is 14 years old and has been going to Pet Smart for grooming for all those years. On his last grooming his regular groomer didn't want to do him so he was given to the manager. They called me the day before and informed me of this and that they would not have him there any longer than it takes to groom him and that they would call me as soon as they are almost through to pick him up. And that I would be charged an extra $15.00. When I picked him up his face wasn't trimmed as close as it usually was. I was told that Rocky doesn't like his face touched and that he attempts to bite. He has never done this before and even if I try to trim his face he tries to bite me.
My Vet told me to give him Benadryl (1 mg per pound) to calm him down. That didn't work. Now he really needs a haircut so does anyone have any suggestions as to how I can trim his face?

There is a new technique called "Chill Protocol" that is being used in vet medicine. It is designed for aggressive or fearful dogs and has shown great promise in dealing with these situations.
It uses a combination of drugs, usually gabapentin, melatonin and acepromazine (or other medications) timed in sequence.
Check with your vet and see if this would be appropriate.

I feel your pain. My new Scottie rescue bit one groomer. I didn't have a good feeling about her when I consulted with her prior to taking him in, but she was recommended by another Scottie owner.
I sat in on his first grooming after I got him. It was his breeder who groomed him and she was very gentle and talked to me about how to trim, etc. He made it through that without any problems. Then I had to go to Indiana multiple times last summer for family crises and I had the gal who groomed my previous Scotties and she has had no problem with him.
The groomer he bit said he was very uncooperative, didn't want a bath, didn't was blown dry, etc. Basically didn't like any of the process. Now this dog wants in the shower when I am in there, loves the water, never fusses about a bath. . seems to love it.
So, he won't be going back there. Right now he's pretty shaggy. I did buy a grooming table, but I've never been good at their heads, which is the trademark for the breed. My vet has a groomer and when I was there yesterday, the tech said she is very good with dogs and she thought she would get along with Brendon.
The breeder of my dog said she had a groomer in Orlando who would do a good job. Said she ONLY does terriers and works well with those breeds, so that may be an option as well.
I would really like to find one I could go to regularly. They are hard to find.

It is finally starting to warm up today. We had 3 days of frost in a row. My grass is brown and many plants are dead. My neighbor has a good size sea grape tree in his back yard and it looks terrible. We haven't had this kind of cold weather in Florida in several years.
Monty likes it when it gets cold. I have a hard time getting him inside when it cools down. He just wants to wander around in the back yard while I am yelling at him to get in the house! He almost made me late for work today as I had to chase him into the house.
I hope everyone is doing well.

Thank you, my Vet says it won't hurt Rocky so I'm picking up a dosage today for some facial grooming tomorrow. I'll let you know if it works on my Rocky Road in a few days.

I picked up the med today, it is Gabapentin caps 100mg and will be giving him 2 an hour before his appointment.

Well my Rocky got groomed today and he looks so nice. The meds did calm him down. Just for everyones info if you do use the Melatonin make sure it doesn't have any sweetner in it, that can be harmful to dogs. Check the ingredients and if there is Xylitol in it, don't use for your dog.
I gave him his gabapentin and melatonin at 1:00 pm and had him to the Vet at 2:00pm. Between the Vet and the Groomer next door I got him back at 3:50 pm. The Vet did a shot that was due and also his anal glands. His next grooming appt. is set up in late March. First time with this Groomer, but my Rocky looks real good.
Don't know how long the meds are going to last but Rocky is sleeping off and on and when he does get up to walk he kinda stumbles a little, guess this is normal, Atleast I hope it is.
Once again thank you Doc for the info. Really appreciate it.
