Richard posted on FB that the latest stroke may cost him his sight in the one sighted eye he has left. Very concerning.

Suggest even if Richard can no longer post, we do not let the Old Fella thread die.

Thank you for letting everyone know. Bad news for sure [emoticon]

Yes, in honor of Richard and Old Fella we must keep this thread going and active.

So last August we Lost our Cookie Monster (Shih Tzu) to old age and still have our Rocky Road (Shih Tzu) who is two years younger then Cookie (16). Every once in a while he will sit in the living room and stare at the front door like he's waiting for her to come home. I feel so sad for him as he was just a few months old when we got him and Cookie took him in like he was her baby. They never spent a night apart and snuggled up on our bed together. Sometimes I am tempted to get another Shih Tzu just to try to make him happy.

This thread has made me a more patient person with animals, especially Dogs. The stories on here would truly make a great Movie. Someway, somehow we have got to find someone to do just that, The Story Of Old Fella.

Old Fella's story keeps bringing to mind the 100 lb. border collie mix I grew up with. Boots was the sweetest dog in the world. She mothered everything that came by, despite having been spayed before her first heat. Kids, cats, rabbits, horses, cows -- she took care of us all.

Folks could leave us outside all day, knowing that if Boots disapproved of what we were doing, she'd grab the offender by the pants leg and drag us around until we got the message. If we'd been puppy size, she'd have been shaking us to get our attention.

I remember one day in particular: she herded us up on the porch and made us stay there until Dad came to see what was wrong. Big ol' rattlesnake was in the yard and Boots wasn't gonna let it get any of us. She didn't let us off the porch until Dad had killed and carried off the snake.

She knew when we went to the movies, and woe be it if we didn't bring back buttered popcorn for her. She never wanted what we made at home, just the movie buttered popcorn.

Boots only came inside the house twice that I recall, both during really bad storms. She tried to climb into the nearest lap and stuck her nose under that person's arm. Don't know why those two storms and not any others.

She slept in a sheltered ell off the back porch. The cats learned if they slept on or around her, everybody stayed warm. Somewhere we have photos of a large dog almost buried under cats.

Boots lived 16 years. That last day, she met Dad at the back door, accompanied him to the pickup, and wagged her tail as he drove off. When he returned a couple hours later, she'd lain down and slipped away.

Fifty years later and I still miss Boots.

Thanks for sharing this! What a beautiful memorial of Boots! She sounds like she was a very special dog!

I received a phone call from Richard last night. He was on his way home from the hospital. He is now legally blind as his left eye was affected from another stroke.

I told him that we missed him on the Old Fella forum and he said to keep it going. I will check in with him soon and let people know how he is doing.

Burch, Thank you for the up-date.

In remembrance of the good ole days of this thread, Richard was quite the powerhouse of inspiration. Starting this thread, singlehandedly rescuing countless animals, becoming the first RV-ER of the year for Good Sam, Making the Old Fella Rescue a viable operation, the Ole Fella park Statue and the "Bricks". Organizing all the Old Fella rally's and on and on........

Spearheading the cross country tag team delivery of a rescue pup (Anna?) to it's forever home was one of the best things I ever saw!

I can't remember all of his accomplishment's but it is staggering what one man can do if he wants to.

Best of luck to Richard with his new challenges, fortunately he has great family support and help from above.

Please let Richard know we are sending him positive energy and virtual hugs!

I also hope Richard will be provided with occupational health rehab services and training that includes using assistive technology (speech to text and text to speech, etc) so that he still has an avenue to stay in touch online with people, in addition to how to adjust to this new change in his daily living tasks. While this is a new challenge and hurdle, if he has a channel of communication still available to him, it can be beneficial in helping support him through this newest health challenge and allow him to keep in touch with his “online friends.”

I’ll be continuing to pray for him!

I went back to the beginning of Old Fella and read several pages up to the time Richard took the Old Fella in at his home. I saw a few posts that talked about a movie/book on the story up to that time. Wonder why it has never happened? It could be a great movie/book. Anyone know of someone who might be interested in this true story enough to either write a book or make a movie. Years ago I sent an email to Ellen about Old Fella, but never got a response.

I've been back in Florida for 2 weeks today. Had some medical stuff that was put off from last year due to covid. Those are all done now. Whew! Glad for that.

So, today I'm packing up MinnieMee for another trip. This one is back to Indiana. . . where I just returned from. There was a death in Terry's family. His 61 year old cousin died last week. Very suddenly. . . one of his kids found him. So sad. He had had some health problems, particularly his heart and was under a doctor's care, but it appears the doctor was "barking up the wrong tree." This family was Terry's uncle's (dad's brother) and since they were the only relatives of his dad's who had relocated to Indiana (from Mississippi), Terry grew very close to them and we had always spent time with them when we could.

The services are the 30th, so I have a week to get there. I drove down here from Indiana in 5 days, but took my time and visited friends along the way. I hope to get there in maybe 3 days. Still not too much further than my normal 300 miles a day, but I don't think it will be a problem. Will camp in my sister's woods again and have another chance to visit with my Mom. My daughter is coming as well. She will be driving from Virginia, so we won't be traveling together.

I had good weather coming back from my last trip, although the forecast included storms. Missed them all, so hoping for the same this time.
