Be sure to have the rental company show you how to light off and set the heater. Then have them actually start the heater. This will insure there is propane in the tanks and the heater actually works. Make sure the grey (Shower) and black tank( sewer) is empty.
I live in Yellowstone. At that time of the year, you will have a blast..

Thanks for this post and its comments. We are planning a trip next summer, but might push it out til more towards September. Cold nights sounds fun.

Thanks again everyone. I can't wait and we'll have to see what nature dishes up to us. I guess if it's absolutely miserable we can march out of the park to a hookup place...but it looks like we should be fine to try the park with your suggestions in mind. :-)

We rented a 22-footer some years ago from Cruise America. Previously we had rented truck campers from other companies that could run the heater all night. However, the Cruise America camper came with a caveat that you could only run it for something like three hours.

We brought our own gear, including down comforter, so we were fine sleeping. However, it got mighty cold in Yellowstone sitting around after dinner. We had to run the engine so we could run the heat in the cab to keep us warm. This was early June and it snowed.

So make sure you can actually run the heat for all the time you'll need it during and after dinner without draining the house battery. I'd never rent a Cruise America camper again for that reason, and I now ask that question when considering a rental camper.
