I agree. You should have already been on the phone with Dexter. They are good to work with and may help out a lot! But not after the fact!

I cannot disagree more with that statement. I had a total failure of my 6,000# springs. I contacted Dexter 9 days after my warranty ran out and the best they would do was to discount the replacement springs. Total cost was more than $700.00

Happened to us too a few years ago - right off the Dealer's lot. The wheel manufacturer said the lugs were over-torgued. Anyway, the wheel left and we never felt it go. Another motorist flagged us over.
Tires were Tacoma - cheap tires. No tire testimonial here- just lucky.

You ought to let the NHTSA know about this problem...sounds like Dexter should be doing a recall. May keep someone else from having a more serious problem.

Not trying to highjack the post... But feel that I should remind everyone to check your spare. I lost mine in Jacksonville, FL last year doing 70 mph. Did not know it came from underneath the trailer. Guess I was lucky it did not hurt anyone.. Another driver flagged me down outside of town, otherwise I would not have known.
I feel someone was trying to take it and got stopped in the middle. Otherwise it had traveled many miles hanging under the trailer with no problems. New one has chain and lock to secure it to the trailer.

Thanks, Thanks, Thanks. This forum is more than fantastic.
I called Dexter and they were extremely cooperative. They will take care of everything including new wheel, tire, and labor. They will deal directly with the RV Dealer supplying him with new axle and paying him directly for the labor.
So I have to thank Dexter for stepping up to the plate and I have to thank you guys for the amazing information.

Some addition information:
I had all four wheels checked last year at Lone Star RV in Houston. At that time the brake linings were found to be in pretty bad shape and were replaced.
The current repair work is being done by Funtime RV in Cleburne, TX (Southwest of Dallas). I have asked them to check the bearings on the remaining axle for any problems. As long as the entire frame is off the ground, it is pretty easy to check the other axle.
