Portland and Columbia River Gorge

We are planning on visiting the city of Portland and the Columbia River Gorge. I saw there are numerous campgrounds in the area, but does anyone know of a good one that would be central to both Portland and the Columbia River Gorge area? Or are these two areas too far apart? Also, what are the must sees and dos in the Columbia River Gorge area? Thanks!

RE: Help! Two dogs, no A/C, in Las Vegas

Everyone, thanks for all the great ideas. One thing I didn't think about is we are towing a car and it has A/C. Duh. Worst case we can drive around all day sightseeing and be in the A/C. Even if we waste a tank of gas, it isn't a very expensive option. We also will talk to the dealer (Johnnie Walker) if we can hang there if they feel they can have the work done quickly. If something goes really wrong with the work on the RV, we will use the hotel option.
Thanks again for all the great ideas.

Help! Two dogs, no A/C, in Las Vegas

We are on vacation and our A/C unit died. We talked to the manufacturer and they are going to replace the unit, but we have to go to the nearest dealer which happens to be in Las Vegas. We have our two dogs along. We are not sure what to do with them during the day when the A/C is being fixed. We know it can get quite hot in Vegas in the summer. Any suggestions on what to do with two dogs in Vegas during the day to beat the heat?
Thanks!

85 octane OK?

We are traveling out west for the first time. Filled up today near Denver and noticed that regular gas, which I usually use is 85 octane. Since I usually use 87 octane I filled up with that, but I was charged a premium price for it. Is it OK to use 85 octane while out here in the Rockies? My vehicle has a Ford V10 gas engine.

RE: Jayco Greyhawk 31FS troubles

We have a 2009 Greyhawk as well. Have the same rattling front vent, not a big deal to us. Our big drawer gave out as well, I glued it back together and put some nails in it and it's fine now. Try using tow/haul mode on the hills, it might help. I had to reinforce the shower pan, it was really soft in the back toward the drain. And the one slide doesn't kick off when it's open, it keeps pushing to the point that it bows out the wall. Just have to let off the button when it gets to that point. And we've had numerous water leaks, but that seems to be a Jayco trademark. We had a Jayco travel trailer that was the same way. They never tighten the water fittings enough and they work loose and leak. I've tightened them all now, and we have no more leaks. Other than those things, the unit has been great. It really pays to be handy with things.

RE: Garmin Nuvi reccomendations

I just purchased a new Nuvi and it came down to the 1390 or 765T. Went with the 765T based on the reviews that were out there. I agree with The Texan, GPS Magazine website is a great resource, check it out.

RE: campground listings

The campground info that google shows on their maps is all driven by their search results. All they do is geocode the address. The problem with this approach is many state parks for example use the address of their office in their web listing, which in many cases is no where near the actual campground, and many times not even near the park. Look at Salt Fork State Park in Ohio for example.

RE: campground listings

I've tried to list many of them on my site, including private campgrounds as well as public ones (state parks, coe, etc.), and I know I don't have them all, but I'm adding more every day.

RE: Not going anywhere soon...

I'm starting to worry about the snow load on the roof, as there is about a foot on it right now. Hoping it gets windy soon and clears if off for me.

RE: Not going anywhere soon...

They are calling for another snow Tue-Wed here in southern PA but it should be light, and then the chance for another big one next weekend, although that may go south of us. Look out DC and Richmond!

Not going anywhere soon...

Don't think we'll be taking the motorhome anywhere soon, as it's currently buried in about 2 1/2 feet of snow and it's still snowing hard.

RE: Quality: Jayco vs Winnebago

When we bought our class C it was narrowed down to those two. When we looked at Jaycos on the dealer's lot they all looked very nice with no noticeable defects. When we looked at Winnebagos on another dealers lot, we saw numerous defects. Now much of this could have been the dealer. The Jayco dealer may have taken more time to go over the units and fix little things than the Winnebago dealer, but it did leave an impression with us. In the end it was that and the great price we got on the Jayco that made our decision.

RE: How much wind can we tolerate?

We went through similiar conditions in a travel trailer a few years ago. I think the wind was in the 60 MPH range. I didn't get much sleep that night, as the trailer sounded like it was getting ripped apart. I kept getting up and going outside to look at things. When morning came and the winds died down we were surprised there was no damage at all. You have to remember these things are built to go down the highway.

RE: Reserve America - Have you had good or bad experiences?

I never had any problems booking a site with Reserve America. My only complaints would be the added cost ($8 per reservation) and their poor user interface, although the user interface has improved a quite a bit over the last year or two.

RE: Slideout operation question

The other possibility is that they may both be by the same manufacturer, but, are actually different models from the same maker.
That may very well be the case, as the larger slide is the one that stops automatically when open. The smaller slide is the one that doesn't. I guess I'll just keep doing like everyone else and stopping the slide when it appears (and sounds) to be open.
Thanks everyone for all the help.

RE: Slideout operation question

I don't understand, are you still pushing the switch button when it is evident that the room is fully extended?
Yes, I have to hold the switch to operate the slide, as soon as you stop pressing the switch the slide stops. And this is how I operate this slide, as soon as I see it seal and start pushing the wall I let go of the switch.
I just think it shouldn't be this way as the other slide automatically stops when it is fully out, even if you are still holding the button.

Slideout operation question

I have a Jayco Greyhawk class C that has two slides, both made by PowerGear. The one works perfectly, when you slide it out the motor runs until the slide is out then you hear a click and the motor stops. The other slide motor runs until the slide is out and then keeps running to the point of starting to bow out the wall. It only really stops when it can no longer push the slide any further and kind of grinds to a halt.
My questions is what triggers the motor to stop running? Is there a swtich somewhere or does it sense the resistance? In any case is this adjustable?
Thanks,
- Eric
