RE: Would you be bothered if…

Not at all. A lot of people have a problem letting on they spend $40,000 to several hundred thousand on something and it has problems or they wish they had never bought the item. Most RV'ers will be very honest in talking about their rigs good points and the bad.

RE: 6 foor or 8 foot

I carried a 6' step ladder for many years. Many times having to stand on the very top to reach what I wanted to do. For the last 3 years I have carried a 8' step ladder and wish I had gone this route years ago.

RE: Survey : rv repairs - fix it yourself or ?

For over 35 years I have fixed about 95% or more of the needed repairs. My finding usally is if your handy at all at fixing things the RV is not a big problem. Many items such as your toilet pedal, it may very well be less money to try fixing it and if you break something else along the way so what. If all fails you can probaly buy a whole new toilet for just about the same money an RV dealer would have charged to fix the pedal. Now I'm not a full timer so that leaves me the down time between trips to fix of repair. Living in it full time things such as a non-working toilet could become a problem and easier to have someone else do it.

RE: CW packed my bearings, problem?

Good old CW strikes again. Makes one wonder the things they work on and you can't see, how good a job they did on those jobs.

RE: water leaking from over flow hose

Some folks put a shut off valve in the overflow and then once the tank is full shut the valve off. But you have to rmember to open the valve when filling or you may have a much bigger problem.

RE: Michigan RV Dealers

It's been a lot of years since we had dealings with them. But they were very good about fixing the things we found wrong with a used RV we bought there.

RE: sealing the roof etc.

I know there are a lot of Winnie owners out there that say they never had a joint problem. But talking to lot of those owners it's because they don't understand how to check the roof joints. Just looking at most of the joints they look good. I have seen brand new units with under 1000 miles on them and have the roof to sidewall joints open in places so water is getting in. In some cases it takes several years before the damage shows up in the walls, might depend on how much open area there is in the joint. Dealer service I have talked to and many of them do not understand how to check the joint other than look at it. Go to a dealer and take your step ladder along. Pick out a few units that are brand new to 3 years old and press lightly on the roof at the sidewall and then tell me how many you find with at least one area along the side that is open. Even a 40' motorhome with one inch open will let water in.

RE: Transmission oil change question

I was under my MH and discovered the transmission has and oil pan with a plug :@. This obviously allows the oil to be drained, much like the engine. Is this something most MH have? Does this mean I need to change the oil in the transmission more often? 2000 Pace Arrow Vision, F53, V10.
On a 2000 your torque converter should also have a drain plug.

RE: Hydraulic or Electric Slides

We have had both electric and hydraulic operated slides. Our older electric slides held up fine and were quite. Our present electric slide is one noisy piece and slow. I would hate to run it in early in the morning if a near by unit still had folks sleeping. We only had one hydraulic unit with dual slides, it also worked fine and was very quite. I have heard several on the newer RV's with electric slides that are noisy. I would not buy another one if it was noisy like the one we have now.

RE: New vent

I have installed roof vents in a couple of units we have had. If you can get a print of the roof showing wiring, AC ducts, structural components in the roof from the manufacturer, it makes the job much easier. Also if you will be installing a vent with a electric fan sometimes you can use wiring that already is in the ceiling area. That's another reason to get a print if possible.

RE: Algae in disel fuel tank

We have a 38' motorhome with a Cummins engine. The lift pump is clogged with alage. We have been given 3 options and would like some imput so we can make an intelligent decision.
1. Install a filter prior to the lift pump, put chemical in tank to kill the alage and be prepared to change the new filter several times until problem is cleared up.
This may work, but if your on the road traveling who knows at what point the filter may need changing.
2. Drop tank and remove all fuel, clean tank and replace with new fuel. We will have to pay to have haz mat remove fuel to a hazarazed waste site.
This is your best bet for no more problems. This will end any worry of having a plugged filter while traveling.
3. Take coach to a company who says they can clean the fuel and tank without removing fuel.
This one is a hard call, as it may or may not work. If it's far less dollars to do and you can accept maybe sitting beside the road for another filter change go for it.
Option 3 information came from one of the mechanics working at the shop. The shop foreman is working up tenative prices for us and will have them sometime Monday.
If any of you have any knowledge about this, we would appreciate info.

Winegard carryout GM-1518 question??

We have been reading about the Winegard Carryout GM-1518 sat antenna. I don't want to go to a roof mount system so this one looks interesting. For those using one, how do you like it ? I'm also interested in the Pro's and Con's of the system. Also are there other similar type systems I need to know about that are also portable ?
I guess I should add that I am now using a PVC mount with sat dish for a portable use with DirecTV.

RE: How do I manually fill the fresh water tank ?

On ours I turn the pump off, turn the city/fill valve to fill. Then turn the winterize valve to by-pass then turn on the pump, draw my water via the winterizing hose and it will fill the freshwater tank.

RE: Anybody use reusable ice cubes?

We bought a cube style a year ago. Both of us noticed a taste in water when using them. In flavored drinks the flavor covered up the odd taste. We finally tossed them in the trash and back to real ice again.

RE: Popcorn

We use the same type stovetop popper. I find if as soon as the corn stops popping if I dump it into a pan it is more tender than if it sits in the popper a few minutes. I think that's because of the steam build up as it's popping. Another trick I learned to have tender crisp popcorn is to place the fresh popped corn in a open topped roaster pan and place in a 120 degree oven for about 20 minutes. If you ever get the chance try some tiny tender white popcorn. I find it in northern Indiana. You can also find it online and order it.

RE: Wheel simulator noise.

We had the same problem, about drove me crazy. What I did was slit one side of clear tubing maybe 1/4" ID and place it over the edge of the simulator in 3 or 4 places. Each piece about 2" long and the noise was gone.
