RE: Water heater - Gas or Electric?

We use electric when hooked up unless both of us are about to take showers one after the other, then we turn on the gas (both) until the second shower is done.

We use the Wayne's Stabilizer and love it. It takes all of the movement out of the RV

RE: Fifth wheel question

Our unit is 12'8". I'm 6'2 and it is barely tall enough that I can stand up straight in the bedroom. I think a 12' door is low for many if not most 5ers

RE: Website scam debits bank account over and over!!

We have 3 credit card and rotate through them every 4 months.
OK, in English: We use one card from January through April, then switch to the second card until August, then to the third card through December.
We monitor all of the bills every month. This way it is easy to spot a recurring charge that doesn't belong!

RE: 30 amp to 50 amp outlet

The 50 to 30 dogbone will connect just one of the hot leads of the 50-amp circuit to the hot lead of the 30-amp circuit. The other hot lead will float, it will go nowhere. Their "30-amp" 110 circuit will actually be 50-amp 110, but that wont make any difference.
amps is ony how much power is available. If they plug in one lightbulb they will be using a fraction of an amp, turn on the AC and they will use 10 or so amps, etc. when they plug in enough to use 30-amp their internal breakers will pop, but that shouldn't happen.
What you have to avoid is crossing both hot leads of the 50-amp circuit which will give them 220-volts. It is the voltage, not the amps that can cuse serious problems.
If you have a volt meter and want to insure that everything is ok, push the leads in the various plug outlets on the 50-amp plug. when you find the two hot leads you will measure 220-volts.
then plug in the 50-30 adapter. You should measure 110-volts from one lead to each of the other two leads and no voltage between the other two leads. Just check all the combinations and make sure you have nothing that measure 220-volts.

RE: Mouse proofing..helppppppppp

We keep our RV in the driveway next to a wooded area. This might sound kind of crazy, but we keep a bowl of cat food under our rv in the driveway to encourage the local feral cats to hang around. Once in a while we see a dead mouse under the RV, but never inside.

RE: 50 amp service

What you are doing sounds correct, but as others have said, you should have it checked out by someone who is qualified. You can cause serious damage if you wired it wrong.
One note here, and I'm sure I will get some flames from this, running 50-amp wire from the house to the rig can be difficult. We ran 30-amp 240-volt wire and used a 30-amp 240 volt breaker in the house electrical panel. The wire was a lot easier to run and still gives us a total of 60-amps in the driveway. If you do this, make sure you use the smaller breaker in the house panel. You don't want to over tax the wiring.

RE: Combining a 30 amp and 50 amp extension cord

I think I'm lost here!
How do you "combine" two 120 volt generators ???
It's not like linking two DC batteries in series or parallel. Both generators will be producing 60-cycle AC current. How do you keep them in phase ??
I realize that a 50-amp circuit for an RV has two independent hots and a common ground. Are these units built to run in parallel to product 240 volt (sort of) power ??
If that is what they are doing, how can you then push that through a 30-amp wire ???
Did I miss something ??

RE: tv and 5er weight

thanks to those of you that replied to my question, I checked with local truck stop and they will weigh my tv & 5er for $10, she said they weigh tv & 5er, then drop 5er then weigh tv, does this sound right?
That is exactly the first step in the process on our website! From there it is just doing the math and checking against the numbers on your door panels!

RE: Newbie Towing Question

You might not have enough weight on your pin. If you load your 5er with most of your "stuff" behind the rear axle to reduce pin weight, the 5er will have a tendency to porpoise as you travel down the road.
Try moving things around to put more weight on the pin and see if that helps.

RE: elctricians, please give me some insight

There are 2 "flavors" of 30-amp service. 30-amp 110 volt has a single hot wire, one neutral and one ground. The 30-amp 220 volt has 2 hot wires 180 degrees out of phase plus one neutral and one ground. The recepticals should be different. One has 4 wires the other only 3.
Was the outlet specially wired for you? Did you have to jury-rig the connection?

RE: Jordon Ultima for electric over hydraulic brakes ?

We got our Brake Smart 5 years ago. The first time we took it on the road we felt as if our 5er was pushing us forward when we applied the brakes. Our combined weight is about 22,000 lbs. We read the manual and adjusted the "initial brake intensity" and the "power factor" two clicks each. We haven't touched a thing since!
Like KB says, there is no difference with or without the RV attached. The best part is when the light changes before we come to a complete stop. With the old controller, taking our foot off the brake caused a big thump, perfectly smoooooth with the Brake Smart!

RE: Plugging in MH at home?

Just keep an eye on your battery levels. If the system is putting a trickle charge on the batteries 24/7, the fluid levels might drop over time. Just check it every few months and you will be fine

RE: 30 amp Elec Question

This sounds a lot like the same problem we had with our 32 foot Trojan when we were RV'ing on a liquid surface. We ran a GFI outlet down to the pier and tried to plug in the boat and it popped the GFI. It took quite a while, but eventually found a receptacle that was wired with the ground and neutral connected to the same post. A GFI works by measuring the amps going out the black wire against the amps coming back on the white wire. IF the white and clear ground wire are crossed anywhere in the RV, some of the current will come back on the ground wire. This causes an imbalance and pops the breaker.
First thing I would try is to pop all the breakers in the panel in your RV. Hopefully you can plug in without popping the GFI. If that works, try turning on each circuit one at a time until you find the one that pops the breaker. Then trace down that circuit to see if anything is cross connected.
One way to find out what is on that circuit is to turn on all the rest and see what does work!
Hopefully you won't have as much trouble finding it as we did on the water.

RE: Approximately what does my camper weigh?

If you need the numbers to go shopping, use the GVWR of the RV. "Stuff" will expand to fill all available space in the RV and it will quickly weigh GVWR.
